Hardworking Hand Soap
Traditional handmade lye soap, with hardworking oils and cleansing extras.
Ingredients: olive oil, coconut oil, rice bran oil, sodium hydroxide (lye), water, coffee plus grounds / lemon zest, baking soda, fragrance oil.
Traditional handmade soaps are made using sodium hydroxide, aka lye, to break apart oil molecules in a process called “saponification”.
In scientific terms, a chemical reaction occurs when an alkali (lye) is emulsified with the fatty acids in oils and butters. This reaction produces a compound of soap and glycerol.
Modern soap calculators allow the home manufacturer to use exactly the right amount of lye so that all the sodium hydroxide molecules are used up. In practice, we normally use slightly less lye than required so that a small excess of fats remain in the soap. Handmade soaps should feel smooth and creamy, and not drying to the skin.
